Priorymen suffer shock North Riding Senior Cup KO at hands of local Teesside side Boro Rangers

A well below-par Guisborough Town suffered a surprise North Riding Senior Cup First Round defeat by Eston-based Boro Rangers who thoroughly deserved their 2-1 victory at the KGV Stadium on Wednesday.

In-form Rangers, with eight straight wins behind them, are currently riding high the North Riding Football League Premier Division and their at times physical approach seemed to knock the Priorymen out of their stride, despite being down to 10 men for the last 20 minutes of the game.

Guisborough seemed decidedly rusty after the postponement of their previous two scheduled games and struggled to settle into any prolonged rhythm.

Nevertheless it was the Priorymen who took the lead on 31 minutes when from a Steve Roberts cross into the box defender Lee Bythway got forward and smashed the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

But Rangers, with three former Guisborough players in their ranks – Paul Blake, Matt McQueeney and Joel Guy – hit back on the stroke of half-time when centre forward Stu Rose took advantage of the static Town defence to score with a low shot across goal.

Any hopes that the Rangers equaliser would have jolted Guisborough in a good way were dashed on 57 minutes when they took a 2-1 lead when Rose scored his second goal, taking advantage of some poor defensive covering.

And in the 65th minute Rose came mightily close to completing a hat-trick when he got clean through but Guisborough keeper Jordan Nixon came out and saved brilliantly.

Five minutes later Rangers, who had a total of five players booked, were reduced to 10 men when left back Nick Robinson tangled with Guisborough substitute Connor Smith which earned the Rangers man a red card.

Despite their numerical advantage, Guisborough struggled to maintain any concerted pressure on the Rangers goal and it was the visitors who came closest to increasing their lead when Nixon pulled off another superb save from that man Rose to once again deny him his hat-trick.

Guisborough battled to the end and full back Tom Bligh, who worked his socks off, twice got forward to get in good shots but one was saved and the other went agonisingly jut over the bar.

Overall, then, a frustrating night for the Priorymen in front of a healthy crowd of 152 and it turned out to be a night of giant-killing shocks in the North Riding Senior Cup.

Senior Cup favourites Whitby Town went down to an even bigger shock 1-0 defeat at Redcar Athletic, leaving the competition wide open and Guisborough to rue a missed golden opportunity to lift the trophy again.
